Lo xilene è un idrocarburo aromatico molto utilizzato nell’industria sia come materia prima in numerosi procedimenti di sintesi chimica che come solvente. Lo xilene è irritante per la cute e le mucose; ha anche un’azione tossica sul Sistema Nervoso Centrale e sulla crasi ematica. È presente in tre distinte forme isomeriche orto, meta e para e la metabolizzazione comporta la sintesi del metabolita acido metilippurico. Questo metabolita viene eliminato attraverso le urine con una cinetica piuttosto rapida. La sua concentrazione è ben correlata con i livelli di esposizione ambientale agli xileni.
Xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon widely used in industry both as a raw material in numerous chemical synthesis processes and as a solvent. Xylene is irritating to skin and mucous membranes; it also has a toxic action on the Central Nervous System and on the blood crasis. It is present in three distinct isomeric forms ortho, meta and para and metabolization involves the synthesis of the metabolite methyl hippuric acid. This metabolite is eliminated in the urine with rather rapid kinetics. Its concentration is well correlated with levels of environmental exposure to xylenes.
