TPA (Tissue Polypeptide Antigen) is a tumor marker consisting of a 43,000 dalton protein. Various types of tumors can produce TPA: breast cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, digestive tract tumors, urinary tract tumors (bladder cancer), and prostate cancer. Rather than being a specific marker of a tumor pathology, TPA is an indicator of cell proliferation. Its increase is related to the rate of tumor growth rather than tumor mass. Therefore, TPA is more useful in the follow-up of patients with already diagnosed tumors than in the diagnostic phase. An increase in TPA may also be present in non-neoplastic diseases such as liver cirrhosis, biliary tract infections, hepatitis in general, respiratory tract infections, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal inflammation, infectious enterocolitis, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and peptic diseases. It is preferable to stop smoking 72 hours before the test.
