Urinary trichloroacetic acid represents the compound of choice, together with trichloroethanol, in the biological monitoring of occupational exposure to chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons. It is a sufficiently sensitive indicator but not very specific since the toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic characteristics vary, sometimes even considerably, among the various hydrocarbons of this group. For this reason, even the reference values undergo considerable variations. In some cases, such as for example in exposure to mixtures of halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons, it could be useful to combine, or use exclusively, more specific indicators such as the amounts of the various hydrocarbons eliminated unchanged in the urine.
