High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) are a class of lipoproteins that transport cholesterol in the blood. HDL-C is composed primarily of protein and a small amount of cholesterol. Cholesterol is a molecule (a steroid) essential for life and a constituent of the cell membranes of all organs and tissues. However, cholesterol can build up in your arteries, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke, and other health problems. HDL-C is considered protective because it picks up excess cholesterol and transports it to the liver for removal, for this reason it is also called “good cholesterol”. This test measures the concentration of HDL-C in the blood.High concentrations of cholesterol are associated with hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and the development of heart disease. When excess cholesterol is in the blood and is not removed by HDL, it can deposit on the vessel walls and form plaques. These plaques can lead to hardening of the arteries and possibly clog blood vessels, restricting blood flow.High concentrations of HDL-C can decrease the risk of developing plaques, lowering the risk of heart attack or stroke. Conversely, high concentrations of LDL-C are considered harmful to the body: in fact, LDL cholesterol is also called “bad cholesterol”. ”, as it deposits excess cholesterol on the walls of the vessels, contributing to the appearance of atherosclerosis.
