Il Cyfra 21-1 appartiene alla stessa famiglia del TPA ed è un frammento della citocheratina 19; le citocheratine sono un gruppo di proteine che formano il citoscheletro cellulare. Il Cyfra 21-1 ha una discreta specificità per i tumori polmonari del tipo NSCLC (Non Small Cell Lung Carcinoma) in quanto la la citocheratina 19 è presente nelle cellule di tumori epiteliali e dell’albero bronchiale. Non presenta elevazioni in caso di microcitoma polmonare. Il suo livello ematico è proporzionale alla massa del tumore e alla sua aggressività. E’ utile nel monitoraggio della malattia e della risposta alla terapia. Valori oltre la norma possono essere dovuti a cause non neoplastiche, come alcune patologie benigne polmonari associate a infezione acuta.

Cyfra 21-1 has a fair specificity for lung tumors of the NSCLC (Non Small Cell Lung Carcinoma) type as cytokeratin 19 is present in the cells of epithelial tumors and of the bronchial tree. It does not present elevations in the case of pulmonary microcytoma. Its blood level is proportional to the mass of the tumor and its aggressiveness. It is useful in monitoring the disease and response to therapy. Values above the norm may be due to non-neoplastic causes, such as some benign lung diseases associated with acute infection.
