Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) is an androgen, a male hormone found in both men and women. This test determines the amount of DHEAS in the blood. The DHEAS:in males it is involved in the development of secondary sexual characteristics during puberty it can be converted into more potent androgens, such as testosterone and androstenedionecan be converted into estrogen (female hormone) DHEAS is produced almost exclusively by the adrenal glands; a small amount is produced by the ovaries of women and the testicles of men.The determination of DHEAS is useful for verifying the functionality of the adrenal glands. The presence of adrenal tumors (cancerous or otherwise) and hyperplasia (enlargement) of the adrenal glands can lead to abnormal production of DHEAS.Only in rare cases can the production of DHEAS be caused by ovarian tumors.Elevated DHEAS Levels:they may not show obvious signs in adult humanscan be the cause of precocious puberty in childrenin women they can cause amenorrhea and visible symptoms of virilization, such as hirsutism

can lead to the birth of girls with ambiguous genitalia, i.e. not clearly distinguishable into male or female genital organs.
