L’MDMA è una sostanza sintetica comunemente nota come ecstasy, anche se questo termine ora viene usato in maniera generalizzata, individuando una vasta gamma di sostanze talvolta diverse fra di loro. Nonostante sia stato ipotizzato un suo impiego in psichiatria, l’uso terapeutico è estremamente limitato. L’MDMA illegale normalmente è in pastiglie, molte delle quali prodotte in Europa. L’MDMA è un derivato dell’amfetamina e appartiene alla famiglia delle fenetilammine. Sono comparsi nel tempo vari composti omologhi con effetti simili, ad esempio MDA, MDEA, MBDB, riscontrando tuttavia minor successo. I termini di strada con cui si individua l’MDMA sono Adam e XTC, ma spesso il nome della pasticca o della compressa riprende il logo che vi è impresso. L’MDMA è sotto controllo internazionale.

Although its use in psychiatry has been hypothesized, the therapeutic use is extremely limited. Illegal MDMA normally is in lozenges, many of which are made in Europe. MDMA is an amphetamine derivative and belongs to the phenethylamine family. Various homologous compounds with similar effects have appeared over time, for example MDA, MDEA, MBDB, but have found less success. The street terms with which MDMA is identified are Adam and XTC, but often the name of the tablet or tablet takes up the logo imprinted on it. MDMA is under international control.
