- S (sensibile)
- I (intermedio)
- R (resistente)
Among the tests prescribed by doctors, especially in cases of infectious diseases, there may be a swab test. This type of test is very important because many infectious diseases can have similar signs and symptoms, and analysis of the material collected via the swab can reveal the exact nature of the infectious agent, allowing the most appropriate treatment to be administered. An antibiogram is a test that assesses the sensitivity of bacteria to antibiotics. This test is performed in vitro by exposing the bacteria to certain doses of antibiotics. It is usually carried out in clinical microbiology laboratories using a bacterial culture in agar according to the Kirby-Bauer method or in broth microdilution. Together, these methods allow the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) to be established, i.e., the lowest concentration of the drug capable of inhibiting the growth of the microorganism in question. An antibiogram is a laboratory analysis that is performed to select the most effective antibiotic for a given infection. The values obtained are compared with values established by the scientific community, and based on the results obtained, it can be determined whether a bacterium is, with respect to an antibiotic:
S (sensitive)
I (intermediate)
R (resistant)
