Thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) is a protein capable of binding and transporting the thyroid hormones T4 and T3 in the blood. This glycoprotein has a greater affinity for the hormone T4 than for T3, but in any case, the interaction that forms is reversible and depends on the concentration of free hormones. The percentage of free hormones in the blood is very low; in fact, almost all of them are bound to TBG or albumin and transthyretin. The need for transport stems from the fact that they are lipophilic (fatty) substances and therefore not soluble in aqueous solutions such as blood. In any case, in order for the hormone to exert its effect, it must detach and bind to its receptor.
